Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different types of boats, understand how they float, and express their creativity by making their own boat using imaginative play.
Materials and Prep
- Space for play and exploration
- Imaginary boat props (e.g., cushions, blankets, or cardboard boxes)
- Water play area (a small tub or basin filled with water, if possible)
- Imaginary play items (e.g., toy animals, dolls, or action figures)
Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for play and that the water play area is supervised. Familiarize yourself with different types of boats to share with the student.
Activities
-
Boat Exploration:
Start by showing pictures of different boats (like sailboats, rowboats, and speedboats) and talk about what each boat does. Ask the student which boat they like best and why!
-
Build a Boat:
Using cushions, blankets, or cardboard boxes, help the student create their own boat. Encourage them to decorate it using their imagination and pretend to sail on their boat.
-
Water Play:
If you have a water play area, let the student float their boat made from a piece of paper or cardboard. Discuss how boats float and what keeps them up on the water.
-
Boat Adventure Story:
Invite the student to create a story about their boat adventure. Ask questions like, “What do you see on your boat?” or “What animals are with you?”
Talking Points
- "Look at this picture of a boat! Can you tell me what color it is?"
- "What do you think makes a boat float? Is it heavy or light?"
- "Let’s pretend we are sailing! What do you see around us?"
- "What kind of adventure will we have on our boat today?"
