Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will understand the basics of money management and banking, including how to create a budget, the importance of saving, and the different types of bank accounts. He will also learn practical skills to manage his finances effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen for note-taking and calculations
  • Calculator for budgeting exercises
  • Access to a computer or smartphone (for research and online banking simulations)
  • Knowledge of basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  • Budget Creation: Brodi will create a monthly budget based on hypothetical income and expenses. This will help him understand how to allocate money for different needs, such as savings, entertainment, and necessities.

  • Bank Account Research: Brodi will research different types of bank accounts (checking, savings, etc.) and their features. He can compare at least three different banks and discuss the pros and cons of each type of account.

  • Saving Challenge: Brodi will set a savings goal for an item he wants to buy. He will outline a plan on how much he needs to save each week to reach that goal, and discuss strategies for saving money.

  • Role-Playing Banking Scenario: Brodi will role-play as a bank customer and a bank teller. This activity will help him understand how banking transactions work, including deposits, withdrawals, and how to ask questions about his account.
