Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science through fun Lego activities.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Pen and paper
- Computer or tablet with internet access
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Build a Lego model of the Earth's layers.
Using different colored Lego bricks, create a representation of the Earth's layers - crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Take a picture of your model and label each layer.
-
Research and build a Lego volcano.
Learn about different types of volcanoes and their features. Use your knowledge to build a Lego volcano, including the magma chamber, conduit, and vent. Demonstrate how the volcano erupts using baking soda and vinegar.
-
Design a Lego weather station.
Research different weather instruments such as anemometers, barometers, and rain gauges. Use your creativity to design a Lego weather station that incorporates these instruments. Explain how each instrument measures different aspects of weather.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "The Earth is made up of different layers. The outermost layer is called the crust, followed by the mantle, outer core, and inner core."
- "Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's crust through which molten rock, gases, and ash can escape."
- "Different types of volcanoes include shield volcanoes, composite volcanoes, and cinder cone volcanoes."
- "Weather stations are used to measure and record various weather conditions."
- "An anemometer measures wind speed, a barometer measures air pressure, and a rain gauge measures rainfall."
