Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts, recognize numbers up to 100, and solve simple word problems using these operations.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Timer (optional, for timed games)

Before the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with numbers up to 100 and has practiced basic addition and subtraction. Prepare a few simple word problems that relate to everyday situations.

Activities

  • Math Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items around the house and assign a number to each item. The student must find the items and add up their numbers. For example, if they find a book (1) and a toy (2), they will add 1 + 2 to get 3.

  • Story Problems: Create fun story problems based on the student's interests. For example, "If you have 5 apples and you give 2 to your friend, how many apples do you have left?" Let the student draw pictures to represent the problem.

  • Math Relay: Set up a relay race where the student must solve a math problem at each station before moving to the next. Problems can include simple addition and subtraction.

  • Color by Number: Draw a simple picture and assign numbers to different sections. Each number corresponds to a specific color. The student will color the picture according to the numbers, practicing number recognition and following instructions.

Talking Points

  • "What happens when we add two numbers together? Can you show me with your fingers?"
  • "If you have 10 and you take away 3, how many do you have left? Let's count together!"
  • "Can you find something in the room that has the number 5? How about we add it to another number?"
  • "Why do you think we need math in real life? Can you think of a time you used math today?"
  • "How do you feel about solving these problems? Is it fun or tricky?"
  • "What strategies do you use to solve addition or subtraction problems? Let’s share our ideas!"
  • "Can you think of a story that involves numbers? Maybe we can create one together!"
