Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and create different types of sentences: descriptive, explanatory, imperative, and interrogative. They will understand the purpose of each sentence type and how to use them in everyday conversation.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • A comfortable space to write and draw
  • A timer (optional for some activities)

Before the lesson, make sure the student knows what a sentence is. You can explain that sentences are groups of words that express a complete thought!

Activities

  • Sentence Scavenger Hunt: Go around the house or yard and find objects. For each object, the student will create a descriptive sentence. For example, if they find a red ball, they could say, "The shiny red ball is bouncing."
  • Sentence Sorting: Write different types of sentences on pieces of paper (or ask the student to create them). Have the student sort them into categories: descriptive, explanatory, imperative, and interrogative. Discuss why each sentence belongs to its category.
  • Draw and Describe: Ask the student to draw a picture of their favorite animal. Then, they will write one sentence of each type about the animal. For example, "The elephant is big." (descriptive), "Elephants live in herds." (explanatory), "Can elephants swim?" (interrogative), "Feed the elephant some peanuts!" (imperative).
  • Sentence Relay: Set a timer for 2 minutes. The student must write as many sentences as they can, one of each type, before the timer goes off. Afterward, they can read their sentences out loud!
