Objective

By the end of this lesson, Aria will have a deeper understanding of various board games, including their rules, strategies, and the social skills involved in playing them. She will also create her own board game concept, enhancing her creativity and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for notes and game design
  • Board games available at home (e.g., Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess)
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • Access to a comfortable playing area

Before the lesson, ensure that Aria has a selection of board games available to explore. Familiarize yourself with the basic rules of the games chosen for the lesson.

Activities

  • Game Exploration:

Start by selecting two or three board games to play. Aria will read the rules and play a round of each game. This will help her understand different game mechanics and strategies.

  • Strategy Discussion:

After playing, discuss the strategies used in each game. Ask Aria what worked, what didn’t, and how she could improve her gameplay. This will develop her analytical skills.

  • Create Your Own Game:

Encourage Aria to brainstorm and design her own board game. She can create rules, a theme, and even a game board layout. This will stimulate her creativity and problem-solving abilities.

  • Playtest:

Once her game is designed, Aria can playtest it with you. This will help her see how her ideas work in practice and learn to adapt her design based on feedback.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a board game fun? Is it the strategy, the theme, or maybe the social interaction?"
  • "How do you think different strategies can change the outcome of a game? Can you think of a time when a strategy really worked for you?"
  • "When designing your game, consider what makes other games enjoyable. What unique twist can you add to yours?"
  • "Playing games isn't just about winning; it's also about having fun and spending time with others. How do you think games can bring people together?"
  • "After you playtest your game, what changes do you think might improve it? Remember, feedback is super important in game design!"
