Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the various socioeconomic factors that affect businesses and industries. They will learn how these factors influence consumer behavior and how businesses adapt to meet the needs of different socioeconomic classes.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to the internet for research
  • Printable worksheets for activities
  • Markers and poster board for presentations
  • Access to a variety of products (or images) to discuss and analyze
  • Preparation of a simple PEST analysis template

Activities

  • Socioeconomic Class Role Play: The student will choose a socioeconomic class (lower, middle, or upper) and role-play as a consumer from that class. They will discuss what products they would prioritize and why.

  • PEST Analysis Creation: Using the provided template, the student will conduct a PEST analysis on a local business. They will identify Political, Economic, Social, and Technological factors that affect the business.

  • Consumer Behavior Chart: The student will create a chart comparing the spending habits of different socioeconomic classes based on their research. They will present their findings to explain how each class prioritizes their spending.

  • Group Discussion: Engage in a discussion about how changes in the economy (like a recession) can impact consumer behavior. The student will brainstorm ideas on how businesses can adapt to these changes.
