Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of maintaining operational safety and health procedures. They will learn simple practices to keep themselves and others safe, and understand basic regulations that help us stay healthy in our daily activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • A timer or stopwatch
  • Printed safety rules (you can write them down yourself)
  • A first aid kit (real or pretend)
  • A space to play and learn (like a living room or backyard)

Before the lesson, prepare a list of safety rules and think about some fun scenarios where safety is important. Make sure the space is safe for activities!

Activities

  • Safety Scavenger Hunt:

Create a scavenger hunt where the student has to find items around the house that relate to safety, like a helmet, band-aids, or a fire extinguisher. Each item found should come with a brief explanation of why it’s important for safety.

  • Draw Your Safety Poster:

Ask the student to create a colorful poster that illustrates important safety rules. They can draw pictures of themselves practicing these rules, like wearing a seatbelt or washing hands.

  • Role-Playing Safety Scenarios:

Set up different scenarios where safety is crucial (like crossing the street or cooking). The student can act out what to do safely in each situation, while you provide guidance and feedback.

  • Safety Relay Race:

Set up a relay race where the student has to complete tasks that relate to safety, like putting on a helmet, pretending to call for help, or bandaging a pretend wound. This makes learning fun and active!

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think safety is important? It helps keep us and others from getting hurt!"
  • "Can you think of a time when you followed a safety rule? How did it help you?"
  • "What should you do if you see something unsafe? Always tell an adult!"
  • "Why do we have rules about health? They help everyone stay happy and healthy!"
  • "What are some things we can do to stay safe at home? Like keeping sharp objects away!"
  • "How can we help others remember safety rules? We can remind them or create fun posters!"
  • "What should you do if someone gets hurt? Know how to use a first aid kit!"
  • "Remember, safety is everyone's job! We all need to help each other stay safe!"
