Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will gain a deeper understanding of various natural disasters, their causes, and effects, as well as how they are portrayed in movies. He will analyze the accuracy of these portrayals while developing critical thinking skills related to geography and disaster preparedness.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to natural disaster movies (e.g., Twister, San Andreas, Volcano, The Day After Tomorrow)
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Internet access for research
  • Timer (for timed activities)

Before the lesson, make sure to select a couple of natural disaster movies that are engaging and educational. Familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of different natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

Activities

  • Movie Viewing and Note-Taking: Watch a chosen natural disaster movie. While watching, Brodi should take notes on the types of disasters portrayed, the scientific accuracy of the events, and any safety measures depicted.
  • Discussion and Analysis: After watching the movie, engage in a discussion about what Brodi observed. Ask questions like, "What did you think was realistic?" and "What could happen in real life?"
  • Creative Writing: Brodi can write a short story or script about a natural disaster scenario, incorporating accurate scientific facts. This will help reinforce the knowledge gained from the movie.
  • Research Project: Choose one natural disaster featured in the movie and research its real-life occurrences, effects, and safety measures. Brodi can create a presentation or a report based on his findings.
  • Quiz Time: Create a fun quiz based on the movie and the facts learned about the natural disasters. This can be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions.
