Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be familiar with using a sewing machine to create basic straight stitches. They will also learn how to make a simple scissor keeper using these stitches on plain fabric.
Materials and Prep
- Sewing machine
- Plain fabric (such as cotton)
- Scissors
- Thread for sewing machine
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Fabric marker or chalk
- Iron (optional, for smoothing fabric)
Before starting, ensure the sewing machine is set up and ready to use. Check that the needle is appropriate for the fabric, and the thread is correctly threaded through the machine.
Activities
-
Getting to Know the Sewing Machine
Introduce the sewing machine to the student. Show them how to turn it on and off, and explain the different parts like the foot pedal and the needle. Let them press the foot pedal while you guide the fabric through the machine to see how it works.
-
Practicing Straight Stitches
Provide the student with plain fabric to practice straight stitches. Demonstrate how to guide the fabric while sewing and encourage them to try it themselves. Make it fun by counting the stitches together!
-
Making the Scissor Keeper
Guide the student through the steps of creating a simple scissor keeper. Help them measure and mark the fabric, then sew the edges together with straight stitches. Celebrate their creation once it's complete!
