Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have created a unique piece of art inspired by Canadian culture, learned about important symbols and landmarks of Canada, and developed a greater appreciation for the country's rich history and diversity.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any type will do)
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • String or yarn (if available)
  • Access to a computer or books for research (if necessary)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and set up a comfortable workspace. It might be helpful to look up some interesting facts about Canada to share during the activities.

Activities

  • Map of Canada:

Draw a simple outline of Canada on a sheet of paper. Label the provinces and territories, and then decorate it with symbols that represent each area, like the maple leaf for Ontario or the totem poles for British Columbia.

  • Canadian Wildlife Collage:

Create a collage using drawings or cut-outs of animals that are native to Canada, such as beavers, moose, and polar bears. Use glue to attach them to a larger piece of paper and add fun facts about each animal.

  • Create a Canadian Flag:

Using colored pencils or crayons, design your own version of the Canadian flag. You can also use paper to cut out shapes and glue them onto a background to create a 3D effect.

  • Storytime and Art:

Read a short story or watch a video about a famous Canadian figure or event. Afterward, create a drawing or painting that represents what you learned from the story.
