Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to discuss the elements and principles of art as seen in various Philippine festivals, identify these elements and principles in Asian festivals and theatrical forms, and explain the unique characteristics that distinguish these cultural celebrations.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to online resources or books about Philippine festivals
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative activities
  • Knowledge of key Philippine festivals such as Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, and Pahiyas
  • Understanding of basic elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, space) and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity)

Activities

  1. Festival Research Project

    The student will choose a Philippine festival and conduct research on its significance, elements, and principles of art involved. They will create a short presentation to share their findings.

  2. Art Creation

    Using the art supplies, the student will create their own festival-inspired artwork, applying the elements and principles of art they have learned. They can choose to design a festival poster or a representation of a festival scene.

  3. Discussion and Reflection

    After completing the research and artwork, the student will participate in a discussion reflecting on what they have learned about the uniqueness of Asian festivals and theatrical forms, focusing on how culture influences art.
