Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lilli will understand the basic concepts of climate change, its causes, and its effects on the planet. She will be able to identify ways to help combat climate change in her daily life and express her thoughts on the importance of taking care of our environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes.
  • Colored pencils or markers for drawing.
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if needed).
  • Printouts of climate change facts (optional).
  • Prepare a comfortable space for discussions and activities.

Activities

  • Climate Change Brainstorm:

Start with a brainstorming session where Lilli can write down everything she knows about climate change. Encourage her to think about questions she has and things she is curious about. This will help guide the lesson.

  • Art Project - Climate Change Poster:

Have Lilli create a poster that illustrates the effects of climate change. She can choose to focus on animals, plants, or weather patterns. This will allow her to express her understanding creatively.

  • Research and Presentation:

Let Lilli pick a specific topic related to climate change (like melting ice caps or endangered species). She can do some research and then present her findings to you. This will help her practice her research and presentation skills.

  • Climate Action Plan:

Discuss ways Lilli can help combat climate change in her daily life. Together, create a simple action plan that includes small changes she can make, like recycling or conserving water.

Talking Points

  • "Climate change is when the Earth's climate changes over time, and it can happen because of natural events or human activities."
  • "One major cause of climate change is the greenhouse effect, which happens when gases in our atmosphere trap heat from the sun."
  • "Did you know that burning fossil fuels, like coal and oil, releases a lot of carbon dioxide? That's one reason why our planet is getting warmer!"
  • "Climate change can lead to extreme weather, like hurricanes, droughts, and floods. These events can affect both people and animals."
  • "It's important for us to take care of our planet. We can all make a difference by reducing waste, using less energy, and being mindful of our resources."
  • "Even small actions, like turning off lights when we leave a room or using reusable bags, can help fight climate change!"
  • "Remember, every little bit helps! If we all work together, we can create a healthier planet for future generations."
