Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lilli will be able to understand and apply basic concepts of geometry, including identifying shapes, calculating perimeter, and understanding area. She will also develop problem-solving skills through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler (or any straight edge)
  • Coloring pencils or markers
  • A timer (optional for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure that Lilli understands basic shapes (like squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles) and has some familiarity with measuring lengths using a ruler.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house or garden. Lilli will look for different geometric shapes in everyday objects and draw them. This will help her recognize shapes in the real world.

  • Perimeter Puzzle:

Create a few simple shapes on paper and ask Lilli to measure the sides with a ruler. She will then calculate the perimeter of each shape. This activity reinforces the concept of perimeter.

  • Area Art:

Using the shapes she measured, Lilli will color them in and write down the area for each shape. For rectangles, she can use the formula: length x width. This combines creativity with math!

  • Math Relay:

Set up a math relay where Lilli has to solve a series of geometry problems (like finding the perimeter or area) within a time limit. This adds a fun, competitive aspect to learning!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that geometry is all around us? Look at the shape of a pizza! What shape is it?"
  • "Perimeter is like the fence around your yard. It tells us how far we need to walk to go around a shape!"
  • "When we talk about area, think about how much space something takes up. If you want to put a rug in your room, you need to know the area!"
  • "Shapes can be found everywhere! Can you find a circle, a square, and a triangle in your room?"
  • "Let's see if we can make a cool art piece using the shapes we measure. How about a colorful garden of shapes?"
  • "Math can be a game! How fast can you solve these problems? Let’s make it fun!"
