Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the different seasons in the Philippines, how they affect the environment, and the activities associated with each season. The student will also learn to appreciate the unique climate and weather patterns of the Philippines.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Colored markers or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, it's helpful to know that the Philippines has two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season usually runs from December to May, while the wet season is from June to November. Understanding these basic concepts will help during the activities.

Activities

  • Seasonal Chart Creation

Have the student create a seasonal chart on paper. They can divide the paper into two sections: one for the dry season and one for the wet season. In each section, they can draw pictures or write down activities that are popular during that season, like going to the beach in the dry season or making paper boats during the rainy season.

  • Weather Diary

Encourage the student to start a weather diary for a week. Each day, they can write down the weather and how it feels outside. They can note if it’s sunny, rainy, or cloudy, and describe what they did that day based on the weather.

  • Nature Walk

Take a short nature walk outside and observe the environment. Ask the student to look for signs of the current season, such as flowers blooming during the dry season or puddles forming during the wet season. They can take notes or sketch what they see.

  • Seasonal Storytelling

Have the student create a short story based on a character experiencing both seasons in the Philippines. They can describe the character's adventures and how the weather affects their daily life.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that the Philippines has only two main seasons? It's different from places that have four seasons like winter and summer!"
  • "The dry season is perfect for fun outdoor activities like going to the beach or hiking. What’s your favorite thing to do when it’s sunny?"
  • "In the wet season, the rain is important because it helps plants grow. Can you think of any plants that need a lot of water?"
  • "During the rainy season, people often use umbrellas. Do you have a favorite color for your umbrella?"
  • "The weather can change quickly! Have you ever been caught in a surprise rainstorm? What did you do?"
  • "In some areas, the wet season can lead to typhoons. They can be really strong storms. What do you think people should do to stay safe?"
  • "What activities do you think are best for each season? Let’s brainstorm some ideas together!"
