Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and recite a few nursery rhymes, understand their rhythm and rhyme, and engage in fun activities related to the rhymes.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are needed; just a comfortable space to sit and play.
- Be prepared to sing and act out nursery rhymes together.
- Know a few popular nursery rhymes to share, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and "Humpty Dumpty."
Activities
-
Sing Along: Start by singing a nursery rhyme together. Encourage the student to join in on the repeated phrases and actions. For example, when singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," use hand motions to mimic twinkling stars.
-
Act It Out: Choose a nursery rhyme and act it out together. For "Itsy Bitsy Spider," pretend to climb up the water spout and then make rain with your hands. This helps the child connect movements with the rhyme.
-
Rhyme Time: Say a line from a nursery rhyme and pause for the child to fill in the next part. For example, say "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great..." and let them finish with "fall!"
-
Draw and Color: After singing, encourage the child to draw a picture related to their favorite nursery rhyme. For example, they can draw a spider or a star. Discuss what they are drawing to reinforce the rhyme.
Talking Points
- "Can you sing with me? Let's make it fun!"
- "What does the spider do? Can you show me how it climbs?"
- "Humpty Dumpty is a funny egg! What do you think happened to him?"
- "Look at the stars! Can you twinkle your fingers like a star?"
