Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of building cars to the student. Discuss the different components of a car, such as wheels, body, windows, etc.

  2. Ask the student to imagine and design their own car using the construction paper, scissors, and glue. Encourage them to be creative and think about the different shapes and sizes of the car parts.

  3. Once the car design is complete, guide the student to count the number of wheels, windows, and other components they have used. Have them write down the numbers on the car design.

  4. Next, ask the student to calculate the total number of components used in their car. They can add up the numbers they wrote down or use a calculator if available.

  5. Encourage the student to share their car design and the total number of components with you or other family members. Discuss any interesting findings or observations.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Can you name some car parts that you know? Let's think about wheels, windows, and the body of the car."
  • "Now, let's use our imagination and design our own cars using construction paper, scissors, and glue. Think about the different shapes and sizes of the car parts."
  • "After you finish designing your car, let's count the number of wheels, windows, and other components you used. Write down the numbers on your car design."
  • "Now, let's calculate the total number of components used in your car. You can add up the numbers you wrote down or use a calculator if you have one."
  • "Great job! Now, let's share your car design and the total number of components with me or other family members. Can you tell us anything interesting you noticed?"
