Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Lego blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Lego blocks (various colors and sizes)
- Number cards (1 to 10)
- Math manipulatives (optional)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of counting and recognizing numbers from 1 to 10.
Activities
-
Counting with Lego:
Take a pile of Lego blocks and count how many blocks you have. Write down the number and try to build a tower using the same number of blocks.
-
Addition with Lego:
Choose two number cards randomly (e.g., 3 and 5). Use Lego blocks to represent each number and then combine them to find the sum. Count the total number of blocks you used.
-
Subtraction with Lego:
Choose two number cards randomly (e.g., 8 and 2). Use Lego blocks to represent the larger number and remove the blocks according to the smaller number. Count the remaining blocks.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Math can be so much fun, especially when we get to play with Lego blocks!"
- "Today, we are going to practice our counting skills by counting how many Lego blocks we have."
- "Let's use our Lego blocks to learn addition. We will combine two numbers and count how many blocks we have in total."
- "Now, let's try subtraction. We will start with a larger number of blocks and remove some to find out how many are left."
- "Great job! You are becoming a Lego math expert!"
