Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply geometric concepts in relation to dance movements.
Materials and Prep
- Open space for movement
- Music player
- Paper and pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Warm-up with shapes:
- Stand in the middle of the open space.
- Ask yourself, "What shape can I make with my body?"
- Choose a shape (e.g., triangle, square, circle) and hold the pose for a few seconds.
- Repeat with different shapes.
-
Explore angles:
- Play a piece of music.
- As the music plays, move around the space and try to create different angles with your body.
- Experiment with acute, obtuse, and right angles.
-
Pattern dance:
- Draw a simple pattern on a piece of paper (e.g., square, triangle, circle).
- Using the pattern as a guide, create a dance routine that incorporates the shapes.
- Perform the routine while the music plays.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
- "In dance, we can use different shapes and angles to create visually interesting movements."
- "Shapes like triangles, squares, and circles can be seen in various dance poses and formations."
- "Angles can add dynamic and expressive elements to dance routines."
- "Patterns in dance can be created using different shapes and repeated movements."
