Introduction: What is a Budget? (Life Skill & English)
Hi Daniella and Alisia! Today, we're going on a 'Smart Spending Adventure'! We'll learn a really important life skill: budgeting. A budget is like a plan for your money. It helps you decide how much money you have (your income) and how you will spend it (your expenses). It makes sure you have enough money for the things you *need* before you buy things you just *want*.
Let's talk about 'needs' versus 'wants'. Needs are things you absolutely must have to live, like food, water, a place to live (shelter), and basic clothes. Wants are things that are nice to have but you could live without, like video games, extra toys, fancy snacks, or the newest gadget. Can you think of one need and one want each?
Activity 1: Needs vs. Wants Sorting (English & Critical Thinking)
Let's look at a list of items. Read them together and decide if each is usually a 'need' or a 'want':
- Vegetables (Need)
- A new bike (Want)
- School shoes (Need)
- A trip to the amusement park (Want)
- Milk (Need)
- A pet goldfish (Want)
- A warm coat for winter (Need)
- Candy (Want)
Discuss why you sorted them that way. Sometimes it can be tricky!
Activity 2: The Snack Budget Challenge (Math & English)
Imagine you each get a weekly budget of $15 just for your snacks and maybe one small fun item for the week. Your job is to plan what you could buy using the grocery flyers or website.
- Make a List (English): Write down the snacks or items you'd like to buy.
- Find the Prices (English - Reading): Look up the price for each item on your list. Write it down next to the item.
- Calculate the Total (Math): Add up the prices of all the items on your list. Use paper and pencil, or the calculator if needed.
- Check Your Budget (Math): Is your total less than or equal to $15? If yes, great job! You stayed within your budget! If it's more than $15, what could you take off your list or swap for something cheaper to meet your budget? (Practice subtraction here: $YourTotal - $15 = How much you are over).
- Discuss (Critical Thinking): Did you choose mostly needs (like fruit for snacks) or wants (like chips or cookies)? Was it hard to decide? What happens if you spend all your budget at the start of the week?
Wrap-up:
Great job being super smart spenders today, Daniella and Alisia! Budgeting helps us make good choices with our money. It means thinking about needs first, then wants, and planning so we don't run out of money for important things. How can you use budgeting with your own allowance or birthday money?
