Introduction (5-10 mins):

Hey Brodi! Ever watched a TV show and wondered what everyone else *really* thought about it? Today, you're going to become a TV critic and family interviewer! We'll watch an episode of a show you like and then dive deep by chatting with family about their take. This is a fun way to practice analyzing media and understanding different viewpoints.

Activity 1: Choose Your Episode (10 mins):

Let's pick an episode! Think about:

  • What show are you interested in analyzing? (Maybe something with interesting characters or a cool plot?)
  • Is it an episode your family members would likely watch or have opinions on? (Consider age-appropriateness and interests).
  • Aim for a standard episode length (20-50 minutes).

Once you've decided, get ready to watch!

Activity 2: Active Watching & Note-Taking (Episode Length + 10 mins):

Watch the chosen episode. As you watch, jot down notes in your notebook or a digital document. Focus on:

  • Plot: What were the main events? What was the central conflict?
  • Characters: Who were the main characters? How did they develop or change? What were their motivations?
  • Themes/Messages: What underlying ideas or messages did you notice (e.g., friendship, courage, consequences)?
  • Production (Optional): Anything stand out about the music, camera work, or special effects?
  • Your Initial Reaction: What did you like or dislike? How did it make you feel?

Activity 3: Prepare Your Interview Questions (15 mins):

Now, think like an interviewer! Create 5-7 open-ended questions to ask your family members about the episode. Avoid simple yes/no questions. Good examples:

  • "What did you think was the most interesting part of the episode, and why?"
  • "Which character did you relate to the most (or least), and what made you feel that way?"
  • "What message or theme did you take away from this episode?"
  • "If you could change one thing about the episode, what would it be?"
  • "How did this episode make you feel?"
  • "Was there anything that surprised you or made you think?"

Activity 4: Conduct Family Interviews (Variable Time - approx 10-15 mins per person):

Approach 2-3 family members who watched the episode (or are willing to watch it!). Explain your 'assignment' briefly. Ask your prepared questions.

  • Listen carefully to their answers.
  • Take good notes (or ask permission to record their responses).
  • Ask follow-up questions if something they say is particularly interesting! ("Can you tell me more about why you felt that way?")
  • Thank them for their time and insights!

Activity 5: Analyze & Synthesize (20-30 mins):

Look over your notes from watching the episode and your interview notes.

  • Compare your own analysis with the opinions of your family members. Where did you agree? Where did you disagree?
  • Did anyone notice something you missed? Did you notice something they missed?
  • Were there any common themes in how people reacted?
  • What surprised you most about your family's perspectives?

Activity 6: Share Your Findings (15-20 mins):

Organize your thoughts! You could:

  • Write a short (1-2 paragraph) summary comparing your critique to your family's views.
  • Create a simple chart comparing responses to specific questions.
  • Give a brief verbal report summarizing what you learned about the episode and about different perspectives.

Discuss your key takeaways. What did you learn about the show? What did you learn about analyzing media? What did you learn from hearing your family's opinions?

Optional Extension: Find professional reviews of the episode online. How do they compare to your analysis and your family's opinions?
