My Pet Friends!

Materials Needed:

  • Pictures or small toy figures of common pets (dog, cat, fish, bird)
  • Construction paper (any color)
  • Pre-cut simple shapes for a pet (e.g., fish shape, circles for eyes)
  • Child-safe glue stick
  • Optional: Music player for a pet song (e.g., "B-I-N-G-O", "Old MacDonald" with pet verses)

Lesson Activities (Approx. 20 minutes total):

1. Introduction & Pet Sounds (5 mins):

  • Gather with your child and show the pictures/toys of the pets one by one.
  • Ask: "What animal is this?" Help identify each pet (dog, cat, fish, bird).
  • Make the sound of each pet together: "What does a dog say? Woof woof! Let's woof together!" (Repeat for cat - meow, bird - tweet). For the fish, make fishy lips and silent swimming motions.
  • Encourage your child to make the sounds and motions.

2. Pet Song & Movement (5 mins):

  • Sing a simple pet-related song like "B-I-N-G-O" (clapping for the letters) or adapt "Old MacDonald" ("Old MacDonald had a farm... and on that farm he had a CAT... with a MEOW MEOW here...").
  • Encourage movement: Bark and wag like a dog, stretch and meow like a cat, flap arms like a bird, swim like a fish.
  • Make it active and fun!

3. Simple Pet Craft (8 mins):

  • Bring out the construction paper, pre-cut shapes (e.g., fish body, eye), and glue stick.
  • Say: "Let's make our own pet fish!"
  • Guide your child to put glue on the back of the fish shape and press it onto the paper.
  • Help them glue on the eye.
  • Talk about the fish while crafting: "Our fish swims in the water. Swish, swish!"
  • Let the child explore the glue stick (with supervision). Focus on the process, not a perfect product.

4. Wrap-up & Review (2 mins):

  • Briefly review the pets discussed: "We learned about dogs that say woof, cats that say meow, birds that tweet, and fish that swim!"
  • Praise your child's participation: "You did a great job making pet sounds and singing!"
  • Display their fish craft proudly.
