Troy's Awesome Lego Math & Build Adventure!

Materials Needed:

  • A collection of Lego bricks in various colors (at least 20-30 bricks)
  • Optional: A Lego baseplate

Let's Get Started! (5 mins)

Hi Troy! Today we're going on a special adventure with your favorite toy – Legos! We're going to use them to explore colors, count them up, and even do some super-secret builder math before we make our own awesome creation. Are you ready, Master Builder?

Activity 1: Rainbow Sort! (10 mins)

Dump all the Lego bricks in a pile. Let's become color detectives! Can you find all the red bricks and put them in their own pile? Great! Now, let's find all the blue ones! Keep going until all the bricks are sorted into color groups. As you sort, let's name each color out loud together!

Teacher Note: Encourage Troy to name the colors. If he mixes some up, gently guide him. Praise his sorting effort!

Activity 2: Count Like a Pro! (10 mins)

Okay Detective Troy, now let's count! Choose one color pile (like the red bricks). How many red bricks do you have? Let's count them together: one, two, three... Great job! Now let's count the blue bricks. How many are there? Let's do this for 2-3 different color piles.

Teacher Note: Focus on accurate one-to-one correspondence while counting. For a challenge, ask 'Which pile has MORE bricks?' or 'Which pile has FEWER bricks?'

Activity 3: Super Builder Addition! (10 mins)

Time for some builder math! Take 2 yellow bricks. Now, add 3 green bricks next to them. How many bricks do you have altogether? Let's count them all: one, two, three, four, five! Awesome! So, 2 plus 3 equals 5! Let's try another one: Take 4 blue bricks and add 1 red brick. How many is that in total?

Teacher Note: Start with small sums Troy is comfortable with (up to 5, then up to 10). Use the phrase 'plus' and 'equals' or 'altogether makes'. Let Troy physically move the bricks together to count the total. Do 3-5 simple addition problems.

Activity 4: Creative Build Time! (15 mins)

Alright Master Builder Troy, you've sorted, counted, and done super math! Now it's time to use all these bricks to build anything you want! Maybe a cool car, a tall tower, a funny creature, or something totally new from your imagination? You can use your baseplate if you like. Go ahead and build!

Teacher Note: Encourage creativity. Ask open-ended questions like 'What are you building?' or 'Tell me about your creation.' Let this be primarily child-led free exploration.

Wrap-up & Show Off! (5 mins)

Wow, Troy, look at what you built! That looks fantastic! Can you tell me about it? Today you were an amazing color detective, a counting champion, a super math builder, and a creative Master Builder! You sorted colors, counted bricks, added numbers, and built something unique. High five!

Teacher Note: Review the activities briefly. Praise effort and specific accomplishments. Display Troy's creation proudly.
