Blend Detectives: Cracking the Code!

Hi Ily, Super Detective!

Today, we're going on a secret mission to find special sound pairs called 'blends'! Blends are like best friends who stick together at the beginning or end of words, but you can still hear both of their sounds. Ready to crack the code?

Warm-up: Sound Check! (5 minutes)

Let's quickly review our single sounds. Can you tell me the sound for 'b', 'l', 's', 't'?

Now, what happens if 'b' and 'l' stand together at the start of a word, like in block? You hear both sounds: /b/ /l/ -> /bl/. That's a beginning blend! What about 's' and 't' at the end of a word, like in fast? You hear /s/ /t/ -> /st/. That's an ending blend!

Mission 1: Beginning Blend Hunt (15 minutes)

I have some 'Beginning Blend Cards' (bl, cl, fl, gr, pr, st, sp, etc.). Let's say their sounds together.

  1. We'll pick a blend card, like 'fl'.
  2. Can you find anything in the room (or in picture cards) that starts with 'fl'? Maybe a flag or a flower?
  3. Let's write down the words we find that start with our blends!
  4. We'll play 'Blend Charades'. I'll act out a word (like 'crab', 'sled', 'spin') and you guess the word and identify the beginning blend!

Mission 2: Ending Blend Builders (15 minutes)

Now for the end of the word! Let's look at 'Ending Blend Cards' (ft, ld, nk, mp, st, sk, etc.).

  1. We'll say the sounds: /s/ /t/ -> /st/, /m/ /p/ -> /mp/.
  2. I'll give you a simple word chunk, like 'la'. Can we add an ending blend? How about 'mp'? What word do we make? Lamp!
  3. Let's try another: 'be' + 'st' = ? Best! 'wi' + 'nd' = ? Wind!
  4. We'll use our word cards and magnetic letters (if available) to build words with ending blends.

Mission 3: Blend Sorting Sprint! (10 minutes)

Look at these word cards! Some have beginning blends, some have ending blends, and some have none. Can you sort them into three piles? Let's read the words in each pile as we sort them. Ready, set, go!

  • Example words: stop, frog, jump, fish, task, glad, went, chip, mask, spill

Mission Debrief: Reading Challenge (5 minutes)

Great detective work, Ily! To finish our mission, let's read this list of top-secret blend words together:

  • flag
  • step
  • grin
  • lost
  • plum
  • desk
  • swim
  • hand
  • crisp
  • blend

You did an amazing job cracking the blend code today!
