Super Sounds: S and Y Fun!

Introduction (5-10 minutes)

Warm-up Song/Chant: Start with a simple alphabet song or a general "hello" song to get settled.

Introduce the Sounds:

  • Show the 'S' flashcard. "Look! This is the letter S. It makes a hissing sound like a snake. Can you hiss like a snake? Sssssss." Practice the sound together.
  • Show the 'Y' flashcard. "This is the letter Y. It makes a sound like you're about to say 'yes' or when you yawn! Yuh, yuh, yuh." Practice the sound together. Make a big yawn sound for fun.
  • Repeat the sounds a few times, making it playful.

Main Lesson (15-20 minutes)

Activity 1: Silly Snake & Yawning Yak

  • "Let's pretend to be silly snakes!" Wiggle around on the floor making the /s/ sound.
  • "Now let's be yawning yaks!" Stretch and make big 'yuh-yuh-yuh' yawning sounds.
  • Alternate between the two for fun movement and sound practice.

Activity 2: Sound Sort Safari

  • Place the 'S' and 'Y' bins/hoops apart.
  • Show the picture/object cards one by one. "What is this? A sun! Does sun start with /s/ like snake or /y/ like yak?"
  • Help the child identify the beginning sound and place the card in the correct bin. Celebrate correct sorts! (Sun -> S bin, Yo-yo -> Y bin, Sock -> S bin, Yarn -> Y bin, etc.)

Activity 3: Sensory Writing/Tracing

  • Show the letter 'S'. Guide the child's finger to trace the letter S in the sand/salt tray while saying "Sssssss".
  • Repeat with the letter 'Y', saying "Yuh, yuh, yuh".
  • Let the child practice tracing independently a few times.

Closure (5 minutes)

Review Game: Sound Pop-Up

  • Say a word slowly, emphasizing the beginning sound (e.g., "ssssock", "yyyyes", "ssssea", "yyyawn").
  • If the word starts with /s/, the child pretends to be a snake (hiss and wiggle).
  • If the word starts with /y/, the child pretends to yawn (stretch and say 'yuh').

Wrap-up:

  • Quickly show the S and Y flashcards again. "What sound does this letter make?" (Point to S). "And this one?" (Point to Y).
  • Praise the child's excellent listening and super sound work! "You found the S and Y sounds today!"
  • Optional: Draw a picture of something starting with S or Y.
