Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using dice.
Materials and Prep
- A pair of dice
- A flat surface to roll the dice on
Before starting the lesson, make sure you understand the concept of counting and recognizing numbers.
Activities
- Roll the dice and count the number of dots on each die.
- Add the numbers together.
- Subtract one number from the other.
- Multiply the numbers together.
- Divide one number by the other.
For example, if you roll a 3 and a 4, count 3 dots on one die and 4 dots on the other die.
Using the example above, add 3 and 4 to get a sum of 7.
For instance, subtract 3 from 4 to get a difference of 1.
Using the same example, multiply 3 and 4 to get a product of 12.
Divide 4 by 3 to get a quotient of 1 with a remainder of 1.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "We can use dice to practice our math skills."
- "When we roll the dice, we count the dots on each die."
- "To add, we put together the numbers we see on the dice."
- "To subtract, we take away one number from the other."
- "To multiply, we can think of it as adding the same number multiple times."
- "To divide, we share or split the number into equal groups."
