Hoppy Adventures: Discovering the Frog Life Cycle!

Welcome, Little Explorer!

Today, we're going on a hoppy adventure to learn about amazing frogs! Frogs are so interesting, and they change a lot as they grow. Let's find out how in a way that's super fun for you!

Activity 1: Meet Mr. Froggy & His Family Photos (5-7 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably on the floor with your child.
  • Introduce the soft frog puppet or toy. "Hello! This is Mr. Froggy! Ribbit, ribbit! Can you say hi to Mr. Froggy?" Let your child touch and explore the frog.
  • Show the laminated picture card of the Adult Frog. "Look! This is a grown-up frog, like Mr. Froggy. See his strong legs for jumping? Boing!"
  • Next, show the card of the Frogspawn (Eggs). "Wow! Before he was a big frog, Mr. Froggy started as tiny eggs like these! Lots and lots of little round eggs, often in the water." Gently tap the picture.
  • Then, show the Tadpole card. "Guess what? The eggs hatch, and out swims a tiny tadpole! See its long tail? It swims in the water. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!" (Wiggle your finger like a swimming tadpole).
  • Finally, show the Froglet card. "The tadpole grows and grows! Soon, it gets legs! Now it's a froglet! Still has a little tail, but it's almost a frog!"
  • Use an enthusiastic voice and simple words. Encourage your child to point to the pictures if they wish.

Activity 2: Froggy's Pond Adventure (7-10 minutes)

  • Lay out the blue fabric or play silk on the floor to represent water.
  • Place the green felt or fabric piece nearby as a lily pad.
  • Revisit the stages using the fabrics and the frog toy/puppet:
  • Eggs: Place the frogspawn picture card near the 'water'. "The frog eggs are in the water!"
  • Tadpole: Pretend the frog toy is a tadpole (or use a simpler representation if you have one). "The tadpole swims in the water! Swish, swish!" Move the 'tadpole' across the blue fabric.
  • Froglet: "The tadpole grows legs and becomes a froglet! It can swim in the water and maybe peek onto the lily pad!" Place the frog toy partly on the blue fabric, partly on the green.
  • Adult Frog: "Then, the tail goes away, and it's a big frog! Mr. Froggy loves to sit on his lily pad!" Place the frog toy on the green lily pad. "Ribbit! Ribbit!"
  • Allow your child to touch the fabrics and move the frog toy around the 'pond' and 'lily pad'.

Activity 3: Let's Be Hoppy Frogs! (5 minutes)

  • "Now it's our turn to be frogs! Can you jump like Mr. Froggy?"
  • Crouch down and show your child how to do a little hop. "Get ready... JUMP! Ribbit!"
  • Make it playful and praise any attempt, even if it's just a bounce or a wiggle.
  • If you have the song "Five Little Speckled Frogs," sing it together and do actions (like jumping off a 'log' - perhaps a cushion).

Activity 4: Froggy Sounds & Quiet Time (3-5 minutes)

  • If you have an audio recording of frog sounds, play it softly. "Listen! Those are the frogs talking. Ribbit, croak!"
  • Hold Mr. Froggy and give your child a gentle cuddle. You can briefly point to the adult frog picture again. "We learned all about Mr. Froggy today!"
  • End with a positive comment: "That was so much fun exploring the frog's life!"

Tips for Parent:

  • Keep the session lively but short, following your child’s attention span. It’s okay if you only do parts of it.
  • Focus on sensory experience and positive interaction. There's no right or wrong way for a 1-year-old to explore.
  • Repetition is wonderful for learning at this age. Feel free to do this activity again on other days.
  • Always supervise closely, especially with any toy or prop.
