Materials Needed:
- Large paper or whiteboard
- Markers (various colors)
- Sand tray or playdough (for tracing)
- Printouts of uppercase 'E' and lowercase 'e'
- Small basket or container
- Objects/pictures starting with 'e' (e.g., toy egg, envelope, picture of an elephant, eraser, picture of an ear, picture of an eye, elf figure)
- Book 1: "Edward the Emu" by Sheena Knowles
- Book 2: "An Egg is Quiet" by Dianna Hutts Aston
- Construction paper (various colors including green and brown)
- Felt (various colors, especially blue and green for Earth)
- Wool roving or yarn (optional, for Earth craft details)
- Scissors (child-safe)
- Glue stick
- Music for movement (optional)
- Beanbags or small soft balls (for 'Egg Toss')
- Hula hoop or drawn circle for 'Eagle's Nest'
Lesson Activities:
1. Welcome and Waldorf Opening (5 minutes)
Gather with Oscar in a calm space. Light a candle (optional, and with supervision) and say a simple verse:
"Good morning, dear Oscar, the day has begun,
Time for adventure, time for some fun!
With ears open wide and eyes clear and bright,
Let's welcome the letter 'E' with all of our might!"
Sing a simple a-e-i-o-u song or a welcome song Oscar enjoys.
2. Introducing the Letter 'E' - The "Energetic Echo" (10 minutes)
Show the Letter: Show Oscar a large uppercase 'E' and lowercase 'e'. "This is the letter 'E'. Sometimes it makes a short sound like 'eh' as in egg or elephant. Listen: eh, eh, egg. Eh, eh, elephant."
Echo Game: "Let's be energetic echoes! I'll say a word, and if it has the 'eh' sound, you echo it back with energy! Ready? Bed (Oscar: Bed!), Red (Oscar: Red!), Cat (Oscar: ...), Pen (Oscar: Pen!)."
Long 'E' Sound: "The letter 'E' can also say its own name, 'EEE', like in eagle or eel. Listen: EEE, EEE, eagle. EEE, EEE, eel."
Sky Writing & Tracing:
- Have Oscar "sky write" a big 'E' and a little 'e' in the air with his whole arm. Describe the movements: "Big E: a long line down, then one, two, three shelves across! Little e: a little line across, then curve around like a C!"
- Let Oscar trace the letter shapes in a sand tray, with playdough, or on textured paper.
3. Kinetic 'E' Activities - "Egg-cellent Energy!" (15 minutes)
a) Elephant Stomp:
- "Let's pretend to be elephants! Elephants start with 'E'. How do elephants walk? Stomp, stomp, stomp!"
- Put on some lively music. Call out 'E' words (egg, elephant, exit, enter, eleven). When Oscar hears an 'E' word, he stomps like an elephant. For non-'E' words, he can freeze.
b) Egg Toss & Letter Find:
- Use beanbags or soft balls ("eggs"). Gently toss an "egg" back and forth. Each time Oscar catches it, he says an 'e' word or makes an 'e' sound.
- Hide paper cutouts of 'E' and 'e' around the room. Give Oscar a small basket. "Let's go on an 'E' hunt! Find all the letter 'E's and put them in your 'egg' basket!"
c) Eagle's Nest Jump:
- Place a hula hoop or draw a circle on the floor to be the "Eagle's Nest."
- Call out words. If the word starts with 'E' (especially long 'e' sound like eagle, eel), Oscar "flies" (runs and jumps) into the Eagle's Nest. If not, he stays outside. (e.g., "Eagle!" - jump in; "Eat!" - jump in; "Apple!" - stay out).
4. Story Time with 'E' (15 minutes)
Book 1: "Edward the Emu" by Sheena Knowles.
- Read the story aloud with expression.
- Point out the letter 'E' in "Edward" and "Emu." Discuss how Edward feels and why he wants to be like other animals.
Book 2: "An Egg is Quiet" by Dianna Hutts Aston.
- This is a beautiful, informative "real-life learning" book. Explore the different kinds of eggs.
- Focus on the word "egg." Discuss how many amazing things start as an egg. This also reinforces science concepts.
5. Waldorf-Inspired 'E' Craft: Our Amazing Earth (15-20 minutes)
"The word 'Earth' starts with 'E'! Our Earth is so important. Let's make our own beautiful Earth."
Activity:
- Give Oscar a round piece of blue felt or construction paper for the base of the Earth (representing water).
- Provide green and brown felt or paper scraps. Oscar can tear or cut these to make continents and land shapes.
- He can glue these onto the blue circle.
- Optional: Use white wool roving or cotton balls for clouds or ice caps.
- Talk about things on Earth that start with 'e' (elephants, eagles, evergreens, everyone!).
This activity connects 'E' to nature, uses natural-feeling materials (felt, wool), and involves tactile work, fitting with Waldorf principles.
6. Review and Waldorf Closing (5 minutes)
'E' Word Collection: "Let's remember all the 'E' things we talked about today!" Gather the objects/pictures starting with 'e' that you prepared. Have Oscar name them. Can he think of any more?
Show and Tell: Oscar can show off his Earth craft and talk about one thing he learned about the letter 'E'.
Say a closing verse or sing a goodbye song. For example:
"The letter 'E' we've learned today,
In such an energetic way!
Now our learning time is done,
Goodbye, goodbye to everyone!"
Extinguish the candle if one was used.
Extension Ideas (Optional):
- Go on an "environment walk" and look for things starting with 'E'.
- Bake something simple with eggs, like scrambled eggs, emphasizing the 'e' in egg.
- Plant something in the earth (e.g., an 'evergreen' seedling if appropriate, or any small plant).
- Watch a short educational video about elephants or eagles.
