Objective
By the end of this lesson, the first grade homeschool student will be able to read and understand a short story about fishing, identify key vocabulary words related to fishing, and answer comprehension questions about the story.
Materials and Prep
- A short story about fishing (can be found online or created by the teacher)
- Paper and pencil for the student
Activities
- Introduce the topic of fishing to the student, asking if they have ever been fishing or seen someone fish.
- Read the short story about fishing aloud to the student, emphasizing key vocabulary words related to fishing.
- After reading, ask the student to write down three new words they learned from the story.
- Discuss the meaning of the new words with the student and ask them to use each word in a sentence.
- Ask comprehension questions about the story to check the student's understanding. For example, "What did the character catch while fishing?" or "Where did the character go fishing?"
- Encourage the student to ask any questions they may have about fishing or the story.
