Welcome, Super Food Explorer Declan! (5 minutes)

Hi Declan! What are some of your favorite foods to eat? (Allow Declan to answer). That sounds yummy! Did you know that food is like super fuel for our bodies? It helps us run, jump, play, think, and grow big and strong! Today, we're going to become food detectives and learn about special parts of our food called Macronutrients. That's a big word, but it just means the main nutrients our bodies need in large amounts to be awesome!

There are three main macronutrients we're going to explore: Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats. Let's find out what they do!

Part 1: Carbohydrates – The "GO" Foods! (10 minutes)

Carbohydrates, or "carbs" for short, are like the gasoline for a car. They give us quick energy to GO, GO, GO! Think about when you're running super fast or playing your favorite game – carbs help give you that zoom!

Examples of foods with carbs: Bread, pasta, rice, fruits (like apples and bananas), vegetables (like potatoes and corn), and even yummy treats sometimes (but healthy carbs are best!).

Let's Watch! Search on YouTube for a short, fun video like "What are Carbohydrates for kids?" or "Energy giving foods for kids". Watch a video (around 2-3 minutes).

Quick Check: Can you name a food that gives us "GO" energy?

Part 2: Proteins – The "GROW" Foods! (10 minutes)

Next up are Proteins! Proteins are like the building blocks for a super cool LEGO castle. They help us GROW, build strong muscles, and repair our bodies if we get a little scrape. Want strong muscles? Protein power!

Examples of foods with protein: Chicken, fish, meat, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and milk or yogurt.

Let's Watch! Search on YouTube for a short, fun video like "What is Protein for kids?" or "Muscle building foods for kids". Watch a video (around 2-3 minutes).

Quick Check: Can you make a strong muscle pose? What food helps build those muscles?

Part 3: Fats – The "GLOW" & Brain Power Foods! (10 minutes)

Last but not least are Fats! Sometimes fats get a bad rap, but our bodies need healthy fats. Healthy fats are like the cozy blanket that keeps us warm, helps our brains think super well, and gives us long-lasting energy. They also help our bodies use certain vitamins! We call them "GLOW" foods because they help our skin and hair look good too!

Examples of foods with healthy fats: Avocados, nuts (like almonds and walnuts), seeds (like chia seeds and flax seeds), olive oil, and oily fish (like salmon).

Let's Watch! Search on YouTube for a short, fun video like "Healthy Fats for kids" or "Brain foods for kids". Watch a video (around 2-3 minutes).

Quick Check: Can you point to your super brain? What kind of food helps it work its best?

Craft Time: My Macronutrient Power Plate! (20 minutes)

Now it's time to make your own Macronutrient Power Plate! This will show all the amazing foods that help you GO, GROW, and GLOW!

  1. Take your paper plate. You can divide it into three sections if you like, one for each macronutrient, or just arrange your foods.
  2. Think about the foods we talked about. Find pictures of different foods in magazines, or use pre-printed pictures, or draw your own!
  3. Cut out or draw your chosen foods.
  4. Glue them onto your plate. Try to include foods from each macronutrient group: Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats.
  5. You can label sections or foods if you want! For example, label a fruit as "Carb," chicken as "Protein," and avocado as "Fat."

As you add foods, tell me which macronutrient group it belongs to and why it's good for you!

Wrap-up: You're a Macronutrient Master! (5 minutes)

Wow, Declan, look at your amazing Macronutrient Power Plate! You did a fantastic job!

Let's remember our three super macronutrients:

  • Carbohydrates: Give us ______ energy! (Prompt: GO)
  • Proteins: Help us ______ and build muscles! (Prompt: GROW)
  • Fats (Healthy ones!): Help our brains ______ and give us long-lasting energy! (Prompt: GLOW or THINK)

Eating lots of different kinds of foods helps us get all these important macronutrients. That's why having a colorful plate is often a healthy plate! You're now a Macronutrient Master!
