The Amazing World of Box Jellyfish!

Get ready to dive deep into the ocean and learn about one of its most interesting and mysterious creatures – the box jellyfish!

What You'll Need:

  • Clear plastic cup or small, clear plastic container (for 3D model)
  • Blue cellophane or clear blue plastic sheet (optional, for water effect in model)
  • String, yarn, or pipe cleaners (for tentacles)
  • Googly eyes or paper and markers to draw eyes
  • Non-toxic glue or tape
  • Colored paper, markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • A large sheet of paper or construction paper (for drawing or diorama background)
  • Access to the internet to watch a short, age-appropriate video about box jellyfish (adult supervision recommended)
  • Your imagination and curiosity!

Let's Get Started!

Part 1: What is a Box Jellyfish? (15-20 minutes)

What do you already know about jellyfish? Box jellyfish are a special type! They get their name from their cube-shaped body, called a bell.

  1. Watch and Wonder: Let's watch a short video about box jellyfish. As you watch, notice what makes them different from other jellyfish you might have seen or heard about. (Teacher: Search for an age-appropriate, short documentary clip on box jellyfish, focusing on visuals of their movement, eyes, and tentacles.)
  2. Discussion Time:
    • What did you find most surprising or interesting in the video?
    • How does a box jellyfish move?
    • What are those long things trailing behind it? (Tentacles!)
    • Did you notice its eyes? Box jellyfish have many eyes – some simple, some complex, up to 24 in total! This helps them see and navigate, unlike many other jellyfish.
    • Their tentacles are covered in tiny stinging cells called nematocysts, which they use to catch food (like small fish and shrimp) and for defense. Some box jellyfish have very powerful venom!

Part 2: Create Your Own Box Jellyfish! (30-40 minutes)

Now it's time to get creative and make your own box jellyfish. You can choose to make a 3D model or a detailed drawing/illustration.

Option A: 3D Box Jellyfish Model

  1. Your clear plastic cup will be the bell (body) of your jellyfish.
  2. Cut tentacles from string, yarn, or pipe cleaners. How long do you want them to be? Remember, some box jellyfish have very long tentacles!
  3. Carefully attach your tentacles to the inside rim of the cup using glue or tape, so they hang down.
  4. Box jellyfish have groups of eyes on each side of their bell. Use googly eyes or draw some eyes on small pieces of paper and stick them onto the outside of your cup.
  5. Optional: You can place blue cellophane inside or around your model to make it look like it's in water! You can also draw a simple stomach-like structure (manubrium) hanging down inside the bell.

Option B: Detailed Box Jellyfish Illustration

  1. On your large sheet of paper, draw a big box jellyfish. Remember its cube-shaped bell!
  2. Add its long tentacles, showing how they trail from the corners of the bell.
  3. Draw its clusters of eyes. Can you show some simple eyes and some more complex ones?
  4. What is its habitat like? Draw the ocean environment around your jellyfish – maybe some seagrass, rocks, or small fish it might be looking for.
  5. Use your colors to make your jellyfish and its surroundings vibrant!

As you create, think about: How do these features help the box jellyfish survive in the ocean?

Part 3: Box Jellyfish Superpowers & Safety (15-20 minutes)

Box jellyfish are amazing creatures with incredible adaptations!

  1. Jellyfish Innovation: Because box jellyfish have potent venom, they can be a concern on some beaches. If you were a beach safety designer, what creative and friendly way could you warn people about box jellyfish being in the water? Design a sign, a flag, or even come up with a little jingle or rhyme. Share your idea!
  2. Super Senses: Imagine you are a box jellyfish. With all those eyes, what would it be like to see the world? How would your stinging tentacles help you as a 'superpower'? Discuss or write a short story about a day in the life of a super box jellyfish.

Part 4: Show and Tell & What We Learned (10 minutes)

  • Share your box jellyfish model or illustration! Point out the special features you included, like the bell shape, eyes, and tentacles.
  • Explain one thing you learned about box jellyfish today that you found super interesting.
  • Why is it important to be aware of animals like box jellyfish if you are swimming in oceans where they live? (Discuss respecting wildlife and staying safe).

Fantastic work, ocean explorer! You've creatively dived into the world of the box jellyfish and learned so much!
