Cora's Awesome Health Quest: Becoming a Health Superhero!

Materials Needed:

  • Large sheet of paper or poster board (for the 'Superhero Shield')
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Optional: Stickers, glitter, or other craft supplies
  • Index cards or small pieces of paper (3-4)
  • A container or hat (for drawing prompts)
  • Timer (optional, for activities)

Lesson Plan (40 Minutes)

Part 1: Introduction - What Makes a Health Superhero? (5 minutes)

Welcome, Cora! Today, you're going on an Awesome Health Quest to become a Health Superhero! Think about what makes a superhero super. They are strong, smart, and help others, right? Well, being healthy is like having a superpower! It helps us be our best selves, have energy, and feel good.

Let's quickly discuss: What are some things real-life superheroes (like you!) need to do to stay strong and healthy?

Part 2: Decoding Health Habits (15 minutes)

Activity 1: Healthy Habits Brainstorm (5 mins)

Let's brainstorm all the 'superpowers' or healthy habits that keep us feeling great! I'll write them down as you say them.

(Educator note: Guide Cora to think about different categories if needed: what we eat, how we move our bodies, how much we sleep, and how we keep clean. Aim for habits like: eating fruits and vegetables, drinking water, playing actively, getting enough sleep, brushing teeth, washing hands, taking baths/showers. This covers MO Standard A: Healthy behaviors.)

Activity 2: Cause & Effect Power-Up! (10 mins)

Now for a fun game! I have some healthy habits written on these cards. You'll pick a card, and then you can either:

  • Act out (like charades) what might happen if you didn't do that habit, OR
  • Quickly draw (like Pictionary) a picture of the good thing that happens when you do that habit.

I'll try to guess the habit and the effect!

(Educator note: Prepare 3-4 cards with habits like: "Eating a healthy breakfast," "Getting 9-10 hours of sleep," "Brushing teeth twice a day," "Playing actively for 60 minutes." After each guess, briefly discuss the cause (the habit) and the effect (the positive outcome, or negative outcome if not done). This covers MO Standard A: Cause and effect of healthy behaviors, including oral hygiene.)

Part 3: Puberty Power-Up! (5 minutes)

As we grow, our bodies go through some amazing changes to become more adult-like. This is a natural and normal process called puberty, and it's another step in your superhero journey!

Some common changes include growing taller, maybe your skin getting a bit oilier which can sometimes cause pimples (acne), or hair starting to grow in new places like under your arms. Everyone goes through it!

With these changes, some hygiene habits become super important. For example, if your skin gets oilier, what's a good hygiene practice to help manage it and keep your skin healthy?

(Educator note: Guide towards washing the face regularly with a mild cleanser. Keep the discussion positive and matter-of-fact. This covers MO Standard C: Identify body changes during puberty and hygiene practices.)

Part 4: Design Your Superhero Health Shield! (10 minutes)

Every superhero needs a symbol, like a shield, that represents their strengths and their mission! You're going to design your very own Superhero Health Shield.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pick ONE healthy habit that you want to focus on, make a new goal for, or get even better at. This is your personal health plan starter!

It could be something like:

  • Trying one new vegetable each week.
  • Making sure you get to bed on time for 9-10 hours of sleep.
  • Doing an active game or sport for an hour each day.
  • Remembering to floss your teeth every night.
  • Drinking more water throughout the day.

Once you pick your habit, grab your paper and art supplies. Design a shield and decorate it to represent your chosen health goal. You can write the goal on it, draw pictures that show the habit, use 'super' colors – be creative!

(Educator note: This activity encourages Cora to create a personal health plan element, as per MO Standard B: Create a personal health plan. Emphasize creativity and personal choice.)

Part 5: Quest Debrief & Celebration (5 minutes)

Wow, Cora, your Health Shield looks amazing! Can you tell me about the health goal you chose for your shield and why it's important to you?

(Listen actively and provide positive feedback.)

That's a fantastic goal! You've done an awesome job on your Health Quest today. We've talked about many important healthy habits, understood why they matter and how they affect us, learned a little about body changes during puberty, and you've even created a super cool plan for your own health goal!

Remember, being a Health Superhero is an ongoing quest. Keep practicing your healthy habits and working on your goal. You've got this!
