Cora's Cosmic Quest: Charting Your Goals!

Time: 40 minutes

Introduction: Mission Briefing (5 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Welcome, Space Explorer Cora, to your Cosmic Quest! Today, our mission is to explore the amazing universe of YOU and learn how to navigate towards your brightest stars – your goals! What do you think a goal is?" (Allow Cora to respond).
  • Teacher: "That's right! Goals are like destinations we want to reach, or things we want to achieve. They help us grow, learn, and make positive changes. Having goals is like having a map in space; they guide us and help us know where we're going! They show us how much we can achieve when we put our minds to it."

Activity 1: Charting Your Star Path - Identifying Your Universe & Assets (10 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Every brave explorer has a support system. In your Goal Galaxy, these are your 'Guiding Stars' or 'Friendly Planets.' These are the positive influences in your life – like supportive family members, encouraging friends, your own special talents, or hobbies that make you feel good. Who or what are some of your Guiding Stars or Friendly Planets?"
  • (Cora brainstorms and writes/draws these on her large paper – her 'Galaxy Map'. Encourage her to think about people, positive personal qualities she has, and supportive environments.)
  • Teacher: "These are wonderful assets! Now, how can we make these stars shine even brighter or enhance these qualities? For example, if a 'Friendly Planet' is 'Grandma's encouragement', how can you connect with that more? If a 'Guiding Star' is 'your creativity', how can you use it more to help you?" (Discuss and briefly jot down ideas next to each asset).
  • Teacher: "Next, every space mission has a target. For today, let's pick a health 'focus' – a small area related to your health you'd like to work on. It could be something like drinking more water, getting 15 minutes of active play, trying a new healthy food, or practicing a calming activity. What health 'Target Planet' do you want to aim for today?" (Cora chooses one). Write/draw this on the map.

Activity 2: Launching Your Goals - Setting Your Trajectory (15 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Great! Now that we have our Target Planet, we need to plan our journey. We'll use two types of rockets: Short-Term Goal Rockets and Long-Term Goal Rockets."
  • Teacher: "A Long-Term Goal is your main destination – what you want to achieve on your Target Planet over a longer period, like in a few weeks or a month. A Short-Term Goal is a smaller step, like a fuel stop, that helps you get there. It might be something you can do this week or even today!"
  • Teacher: "To make sure our rockets fly straight and true, we use a S.M.A.R.T. mission checklist:
    • S - Specific: What exactly do you want to do? (Clear, not vague)
    • M - Measurable: How will you know you've done it? (e.g., 'drink 3 glasses')
    • A - Achievable: Is it something you can realistically do? (Not too hard, not too easy)
    • R - Relevant: Does it help you reach your Target Planet? (Is it important to you?)
    • T - Time-bound: When will you do it by? (e.g., 'by dinner time today' or 'by the end of this week')
  • Teacher: "Let's design one Short-Term and one Long-Term SMART goal for your chosen health Target Planet." (Guide Cora in creating her SMART goals. She can write/draw these as rockets heading towards her Target Planet on the map).

Activity 3: Navigating Asteroid Fields - Preparing for Challenges (5 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Sometimes, space missions encounter 'Asteroid Fields' – these are challenges or tricky situations that might make it hard to reach our goals. What are some things that might make it tricky to stick to your health goals? (e.g., forgetting, feeling tired, other things getting in the way)."
  • Teacher: "Good thinking! For these, we need 'Space Shields' or 'Smart Maneuvers' – these are coping strategies. What can you do if you face one of these challenges?" (Brainstorm ideas like asking for help, reminding yourself why it's important, trying again tomorrow, taking a deep breath).
  • (Cora adds 2-3 'Asteroids' and their 'Shields' to her map).

Conclusion: Mission Debrief & Celebration (5 minutes)

  • Teacher: "Commander Cora, behold your incredible Goal Galaxy map! Can you tell me about your Target Planet, your goals, and how your Guiding Stars and Space Shields will help you on your quest?"
  • (Cora shares her map and explains her goals and strategies.)
  • Teacher: "This is fantastic! You've created an amazing plan. Remember, this map is yours. You can look at it to remind yourself of your mission, and you can even add to it or change it as you go. Setting goals and knowing how to tackle challenges makes you a super-powered explorer of your own life! How does having this plan make you feel?"
  • End with positive reinforcement and encouragement.
