Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze the plot lines of the TV show Friends and determine if they contain any sexist elements.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or TV with internet access to watch episodes of Friends
  • Pen and paper for taking notes

Activities

  1. Watch selected episodes of Friends
  2. Choose a few episodes from different seasons of Friends that showcase various plot lines. Take notes while watching, paying attention to the interactions between male and female characters.

  3. Analyze the plot lines
  4. Discuss with a parent or guardian the specific plot lines you observed in the episodes. Consider the following questions:

    • Do the male and female characters have equal roles and importance in the story?
    • Are there any instances where the female characters are portrayed in a stereotypical or sexist manner?
    • Are there any instances where the male characters are portrayed in a stereotypical or sexist manner?

    Write down your observations and thoughts on each question.

  5. Evaluate the findings
  6. Based on your analysis, write a short essay discussing whether you believe the plot lines of Friends contain any sexist elements. Use examples from the episodes you watched to support your argument.
