Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to explore and understand the concept of liminal spaces.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Liminal Spaces Exploration

Take a walk around your house or neighborhood and look for areas that can be considered liminal spaces. These are transitional areas that are neither one thing nor another, such as doorways, hallways, or staircases. Make a list of at least five liminal spaces you find and sketch them in your notebook.

  2. Activity 2: Arithmetic in Liminal Spaces

Choose one of the liminal spaces you sketched and measure its dimensions using a ruler or measuring tape. Calculate the area and perimeter of the space using the appropriate arithmetic formulas. Write down your calculations and explain how these measurements help define the space.

  3. Activity 3: Liminal Spaces Word Problems

Create three word problems related to liminal spaces and arithmetic. For example, you could ask how many steps are needed to climb a liminal staircase if each step is 20 centimeters high. Solve the word problems and write down the solutions.

Sixth Grade Talking Points

  • "Liminal spaces are areas that exist in between two different places or states. They are transitional and often have unique characteristics."
  • "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division."
  • "By exploring liminal spaces and applying arithmetic concepts, we can better understand the dimensions and measurements of these transitional areas."
  • "Measuring the dimensions of a liminal space, such as its length, width, and height, allows us to calculate its area and perimeter."
  • "Word problems involving liminal spaces and arithmetic help us apply our mathematical skills to real-life scenarios and solve practical problems."
