Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify different types of dinosaurs and understand their characteristics.

Materials and Prep

  • Dinosaur books or online resources
  • Dinosaur coloring sheets
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Printed dinosaur flashcards (optional)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with different types of dinosaurs and their characteristics. Prepare the coloring sheets and flashcards if using them.

Activities

  1. Start by reading a dinosaur book together or exploring online resources about dinosaurs. Discuss the different types of dinosaurs and their names.
  2. Show the student pictures of different dinosaurs and ask them to identify the characteristics of each one. Encourage them to use descriptive words like "big," "small," "sharp teeth," or "long neck."
  3. Provide the student with coloring sheets featuring different dinosaurs. Ask them to color each dinosaur according to its characteristics. For example, they can color a T-Rex with sharp teeth in a different color than a Brachiosaurus with a long neck.
  4. If you have printed dinosaur flashcards, play a matching game. Lay out the flashcards face down and take turns flipping two cards at a time. If the cards match, keep them. If they don't match, flip them back over and try again. The player with the most matches at the end wins.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Dinosaurs lived a long time ago, even before humans existed."
  • "There were many different types of dinosaurs, and they had different sizes and shapes."
  • "Some dinosaurs were herbivores, which means they only ate plants. Others were carnivores, which means they ate meat."
  • "Dinosaurs had different ways to protect themselves. Some had spikes or plates on their backs, while others had sharp teeth and claws."
  • "Some dinosaurs could fly, like the Pterodactyl, while others were really big and walked on four legs, like the Brachiosaurus."
