Mirabelle's World Explorer Training: An Introduction to Social Studies
A fun, two-day lesson plan to introduce the big ideas of social studies. Each lesson is designed to be 15-20 minutes.
DAY 1: Leaders and Stories
Focus Areas: Government & Civics, History
Materials Needed:
- Mirabelle's favorite stuffed animal or doll
- A paper crown (store-bought or homemade)
- A small notebook or a few pieces of paper folded and stapled to make a "book"
- Crayons or markers
Learning Objectives:
- Mirabelle will be able to propose one helpful rule for a group and explain why it's needed (Civics).
- Mirabelle will be able to recall a simple past event and represent it in a drawing (History).
Lesson Activities (15-20 minutes)

Warm-Up: Welcome, Explorer! (2 minutes)
Teacher says: "Welcome, World Explorer Mirabelle! Today begins your special training. Social studies is all about exploring how people live together in our world. We'll learn about being a good citizen, discover stories from the past, see where things are in the world, and learn how we get the things we need. Are you ready for your first mission?"

Activity 1: The Stuffy Town Council (7 minutes) - Government & Civics
Teacher says: "Our first mission is about being a good leader. Leaders help make sure everyone is safe and happy by creating fair rules. Let's create 'Stuffy Town'!"
- Place Mirabelle's favorite stuffed animal in front of her.
- Crown Mirabelle and declare her the "Mayor of Stuffy Town."
- Teacher asks: "Mayor Mirabelle, what is one important rule that everyone in Stuffy Town must follow to be happy and safe?" (Listen for ideas like "We must share the toys," or "Everyone must get a hug.")
- Teacher follows up: "That's an excellent rule! Why is that rule helpful for Stuffy Town?" (This reinforces that rules have a purpose).
- Conclude by saying, "Great job, Mayor! Making helpful rules is a very important part of being in a community."

Activity 2: Creating a History Book (7 minutes) - History
Teacher says: "Great leaders also know the stories of their people. This is called 'history.' History is the story of everything that has already happened. Let's make your very own history book!"
- Give Mirabelle the blank notebook and crayons. Title the first page "My History Book."
- Teacher asks: "Let's record some of your history. Can you tell me about something fun you did yesterday?" or "What do you remember from your last birthday party?"
- Teacher says: "That sounds like a wonderful memory! A memory is a story from the past. Let's draw a picture of that memory on the first page of your history book."
- As she draws, talk about how pictures and stories help us remember what happened long ago.

Wrap-Up: Mission Accomplished! (2 minutes)
Teacher says: "Excellent work today, Explorer Mirabelle! You learned that communities have leaders who make helpful rules (that’s civics!) and that history is the story of our past. You can add more stories to your history book anytime!"
DAY 2: Maps and Markets
Focus Areas: Geography, Economics
Materials Needed:
- A large piece of paper or poster board
- Blue and green crayons or markers
- A few play coins or real coins
- 3-4 small items Mirabelle might want (e.g., a piece of fruit, a cookie, a sticker, a small toy)
Learning Objectives:
- Mirabelle will be able to create a simple map of a familiar space using symbols (Geography).
- Mirabelle will be able to demonstrate a simple economic transaction of trading money for a good (Economics).

Warm-Up: Explorer, Report for Duty! (2 minutes)
Teacher says: "Welcome back, World Explorer Mirabelle! Yesterday, you were a great leader and a historian. Today's mission is to explore places and learn how people get the things they want and need. Let's go!"

Activity 1: Map My Room (7 minutes) - Geography
Teacher says: "To explore the world, we need maps! A map is a drawing of a place from above. It helps us know where things are. Let's be map-makers and create a map of your room!"
- Lay the large paper on the floor.
- Teacher says: "Let's draw the big shapes first. Where is your bed? Let's draw a rectangle for it. Where is the door? Let's draw a line for it."
- Teacher says: "Good maps use colors and symbols. Let's use the green crayon to draw a 'grassy park' where your rug is. Now, let's use the blue crayon to draw a 'river' path from the door to your bed."
- Praise her creation. "This is a fantastic map! It shows exactly where things are in your room. That's what geography is all about: learning about places!"

Activity 2: The Mirabelle Market (7 minutes) - Economics
Teacher says: "Our final mission is about how we get things we want. This is called 'economics.' Let's pretend I have a market!"
- Set up the 3-4 small items like a shop.
- Give Mirabelle the play coins. Teacher says: "You have three coins to spend at my market today. This money is a tool you can trade for something you want."
- Let her browse the items. Teacher says: "You can choose one thing. Which one would you like to buy?"
- Guide her to hand you one coin in exchange for the item she chooses.
- Teacher explains: "You just did economics! You had a 'want' (the item), you had limited money, and you made a choice to 'purchase' a 'good' (the item). That's how shopping works!"

Wrap-Up: Training Complete! (2 minutes)
Teacher says: "Congratulations, World Explorer Mirabelle! You have completed your introduction training. You learned how to make a map to understand places (that's geography!) and how we use money to buy things we want (that's economics!). You are now ready to explore the world of social studies all year long!"
