Shelby's Super Sound Safari

Materials Needed:

  • A small bag or box (the "Safari Bag")
  • 3-4 small household objects or toys that start with the "sound of the day" (e.g., for /m/ sound: marble, monkey, moon block, marker)
  • A small whiteboard and marker, or a piece of paper and a crayon
  • Letter tiles, magnetic letters, or letters written on small squares of paper (have the letter of the day plus a few familiar vowels and consonants like a, t, p, i, n)
  • A "Safari Star Chart" (a simple piece of paper to draw stars on)

Daily Lesson Plan (15 Minutes)

This lesson is designed to be a fun, daily routine. Each day, simply choose a new letter and sound to be the "Sound of the Day" and swap out the objects in the Safari Bag.

Part 1: The Safari Warm-Up (2 minutes)

Goal: To get energized and focused on sounds.

  1. Action Song: Start with a quick, silly song and action for the "Sound of the Day."
    • Example for 'm' sound: Rub your tummy and say, "Mmmmm, mmmmm, this muffin is yummy! Mmmmm!" making the /m/ sound.
    • Example for 's' sound: Wiggle your hand and arm like a snake and say, "The ssssnake is sssso sssilly! Sss, sss, sss."
  2. Repeat the sound and action together three times. This connects the sound to a physical movement, which helps with memory.

Part 2: Discovering the Sound (5 minutes)

Goal: To connect a sound (phoneme) to a letter (grapheme) using real objects.

  1. Introduce the Safari Bag: "Shelby, it's time to go on a sound safari! Let's see what treasures are hiding in our bag today. All of our treasures start with the same mystery sound."
  2. Pull and Say: Have Shelby reach into the bag without looking and pull out one object at a time. As she pulls each one out, help her name it, clearly emphasizing the first sound.
    • "You found a /m/-/m/-monkey!"
    • "You found a /m/-/m/-marker!"
  3. Identify the Letter: After all objects are out, ask, "What sound do all our safari treasures start with?" When she says the /m/ sound, celebrate! Then, write a big letter 'M' and a little 'm' on the whiteboard. Say, "This is the letter M. It makes the /m/ sound we found!"

Part 3: Creative Word Building (6 minutes)

Goal: To apply the new sound by blending it with other sounds to create words.

  1. Lay Out the Letters: Place the letter tile for the day's sound ('m') and a few others she knows ('a', 't', 'p') on the table.
  2. Let's Make a Word: Guide her to build a simple word.
    • "Let's take our new sound, /m/, and put it with the /a/ and /t/ sounds we already know. M-a-t. What does that spell?" Help her slide her finger under the letters as she sounds it out to blend them: "mat."
  3. Silly Word Challenge: Encourage her to be a "Word Inventor." Ask her to swap letters to make new words, real or not.
    • "What if we put the 'p' at the end instead of 't'? M-a-p. Map!"
    • "What if we made a silly word like 'm-a-m'?"
  4. Draw the Word: Choose one real word you made (like "map") and have her do a quick, simple drawing of it on the whiteboard. This connects the abstract word to a concrete picture.

Part 4: Safari Star Celebration (2 minutes)

Goal: To positively reinforce her effort and end the session on a high note.

  1. Quick Review: Ask, "What super sound did you go on a safari for today?" and "What letter makes that sound?"
  2. Praise Her Effort: Give specific praise. "You were such a great word builder today! I love how you sounded out 'map' all by yourself."
  3. Add a Star: Have her draw a big, bright star on her "Safari Star Chart." Say, "Another amazing reading safari complete! Look at all the sounds you are learning!" This visual progress is very motivating.
