Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and interpret text from board game instructions, enhancing their reading comprehension skills while having fun with board games.
Materials and Prep
- Various board games (at least 2 different games)
- Pen or pencil
- Printed copies of the instructions for each board game
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of how to play board games.
Activities
- Choose one board game and read the instructions together. Discuss any unfamiliar terms or concepts.
- Divide the instructions into smaller sections and have the student read each section aloud. Encourage them to ask questions or seek clarification if needed.
- Ask the student to summarize each section in their own words. This will help them practice summarizing and paraphrasing skills.
- Play the chosen board game together, referring back to the instructions when necessary. Encourage the student to use their reading skills to understand the game rules and make informed decisions.
- Repeat the process with a different board game, focusing on a different aspect of reading comprehension (e.g., identifying key details, making predictions, understanding cause and effect).
