Focus: Understanding the sequence and wonder of the creation story in Genesis.
For: Ann (Age 10)
Time: 30 Minutes
Materials Needed
- Bible or Children's Bible Storybook
- 2 paper plates
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- A pair of scissors
- 1 brass paper fastener
- A pencil and ruler
Lesson Plan
1. Opening: Create Your World! (5 Minutes)
- Goal: To get Ann thinking creatively and to introduce the concept of a creator.
- Instructions:
- Ask Ann this question: "If you had the power to create a brand new world from scratch, what is the very first thing you would create? What would you add next?"
- Listen to her ideas and ask follow-up questions like, "Why would you add that? What would it do for your world?"
- Transition by saying: "That sounds like an amazing world! Today, we're going to look at the story of how God created our world and everything in it. He had a perfect plan, and He started with something very important."
2. The Story: Creation in Action (10 Minutes)
- Goal: To interactively teach the seven-day creation story from Genesis 1.
- Instructions:
- Read the creation story from Genesis 1:1 - 2:3. As you read about each day, have Ann do a simple action to help remember it.
- Day 1 (Light & Dark): Ann can flick a light switch on and off or clap her hands to represent the "spark" of light.
- Day 2 (Sky & Water): Ann can raise her hands high to show the sky separating from the water below.
- Day 3 (Land & Plants): Ann can stomp her feet for the land, then wiggle her fingers upwards like little plants sprouting.
- Day 4 (Sun, Moon & Stars): Ann can make a big circle with her arms for the sun, then twinkle her fingers for the stars.
- Day 5 (Fish & Birds): Ann can make a swimming motion with her hands for fish, then flap her arms like a bird.
- Day 6 (Animals & People): Ann can make her favorite animal sound, then point to herself for mankind.
- Day 7 (Rest): Ann can put her hands together, place them on her cheek, and pretend to sleep.
3. Memory Verse (5 Minutes)
- Goal: To memorize a key verse that summarizes God's view of His creation.
- Verse: "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." Genesis 1:31a
- Activity:
- Say the verse together three times.
- Create simple hand motions to go with it:
- God: Point up.
- saw: Point to your eyes.
- all that he had made: Make a big circle with your arms.
- and it was very good: Give two big thumbs up!
- Practice the verse with the hand motions a few times until Ann feels confident.
4. Craft: The Creation Wheel (10 Minutes)
- Goal: To create a hands-on tool that reinforces the lesson and allows Ann to retell the story herself.
- Instructions:
- Plate #1 (The Bottom Wheel): Take one paper plate. Use a ruler to help you divide it into 7 equal, pizza-slice sections. In each section, have Ann write the number (1-7) and draw a simple picture of what God created on that day.
- Plate #2 (The Top Wheel): Take the second paper plate. Cut out one "pizza slice" section from it. This will be the window to see each day of creation.
- On this top plate, Ann can write the memory verse, "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good," around the edge.
- Assemble: Place the top plate (with the window) over the bottom plate (with the drawings). Push the brass fastener through the center of both plates to connect them.
- Practice: Let Ann turn the wheel to reveal each day through the window. Encourage her to retell the story of creation in her own words using her craft as a guide. This is a great way to see what she learned!
