Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through engaging activities related to animals and creatures.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Animal flashcards or pictures
- Counting manipulatives (e.g., animal-shaped counters, small rocks, buttons)
Prior knowledge required: Basic counting skills and familiarity with different animals and creatures.
Activities
-
Animal Counting: Show the student a series of animal flashcards or pictures. Ask them to count the number of animals shown and write down the corresponding number.
-
Addition with Animals: Use the counting manipulatives to create simple addition problems. For example, place 3 animal counters in one group and 2 animal counters in another group. Ask the student to count the total number of animals and write down the sum.
-
Subtraction Safari: Create subtraction problems using animal counters. For instance, start with a group of 5 animal counters and remove 2. Ask the student to count how many animals are left and write down the difference.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with math and animals!"
- "Math is all around us, even in the animal kingdom. We can use math to count and solve problems."
- "Let's practice counting animals together. Look at this picture of different animals. Can you count how many animals there are?"
- "Now, let's try some addition with animals. We can imagine that each animal is a friend joining a group. How many friends do we have in total?"
- "Subtraction is like taking away or removing something. Let's pretend we are on a safari and some animals go away. How many animals are left?"
