Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve arithmetic problems related to dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Calculator (optional)
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Activities
-
Activity 1: Dino Counting
Count the number of different types of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Write down the counts for each dinosaur on a piece of paper. Add up the total number of dinosaurs.
-
Activity 2: Dino Addition and Subtraction
Create addition and subtraction problems using the number of dinosaurs. For example, if there are 8 T-Rex and 5 Triceratops, ask how many dinosaurs are there in total? How many more T-Rex are there than Triceratops?
-
Activity 3: Dino Multiplication and Division
Imagine that each dinosaur lays 2 eggs. How many eggs will be laid by 5 T-Rex? Solve multiplication problems using the number of dinosaurs. For division problems, divide the total number of dinosaurs among the different types of dinosaurs.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "In Jurassic Park, there are different types of dinosaurs. We can count how many of each type there are."
- "We can use addition to find the total number of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park."
- "Subtraction can help us find the difference between the number of two types of dinosaurs."
- "We can use multiplication to find out how many eggs will be laid by a certain number of dinosaurs."
- "Division can help us divide the total number of dinosaurs among the different types."
