Mastering the Basics: Chinese Strokes & Classroom Phrases
Lesson Overview
Target Learner: Cheng (Homeschool/Individual or Small Group)
Duration: 60 Minutes
Focus: Introduction to Chinese characters through fundamental strokes, essential classroom greetings, and action verbs.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:
- Identify and pronounce the greetings 老师好 (Lǎoshī hǎo) and 同学好 (Tóngxué hǎo).
- Identify and pronounce the action/status words 看 (kàn), 听 (tīng), and 好 (hǎo).
- Recognize the basic strokes within these characters and understand their meanings through visual components (radicals).
Materials Needed
- Large paper or a whiteboard/markers
- Printable stroke order grids (or lined paper)
- Calligraphy brush and water (or thick markers)
- Handheld mirror (to check mouth positioning for pronunciation)
- Flashcards with the target characters on one side and pictures on the other
1. Introduction: The Magic of Strokes (10 Minutes)
The Hook: "Cheng, did you know that Chinese characters are like LEGO sets? Every character is built using specific 'bricks' called strokes. Today, we are going to learn how to build the words we use to talk to each other every day!"
- Objective Review: Briefly explain that we will learn how to say hello to a teacher/student and learn three 'action' words.
- The "Magic" Stroke: Introduce the horizontal stroke (Héng) and vertical stroke (Shù). Ask Cheng to draw them in the air using his whole arm.
2. Body: Content and Practice (40 Minutes)
Part A: Greetings (I Do, We Do, You Do) - 15 Minutes
I Do: Model the pronunciation of Lǎoshī hǎo (Teacher Hello) and Tóngxué hǎo (Student/Classmate Hello). Point to yourself for "Teacher" and Cheng for "Student."
We Do: Practice "call and response." The teacher says Tóngxué hǎo; Cheng responds with Lǎoshī hǎo. Use the mirror to ensure the "h" sound in hǎo is coming from the back of the throat.
You Do: Role-play scenario. Cheng pretends to walk into a classroom. He must choose the correct greeting based on who he sees (use a puppet or a picture to represent a classmate vs. a teacher).
Part B: The Action Verbs (Look, Listen, Good) - 15 Minutes
I Do: Introduce 看 (kàn), 听 (tīng), and 好 (hǎo). Explain the "visual logic":
- 看 (Look): Show how the top part looks like a hand 🖑 over an eye 目. We put our hand over our eyes to see better in the sun!
- 听 (Listen): Show the "mouth" radical 口 on the left. We use our mouth to tell people to listen!
- 好 (Good): Show the "woman" 女 and "child" 子. In Chinese culture, a mother and child together represents "goodness."
We Do: "Simon Says" (Chinese Style). Teacher says "Kàn!" and everyone puts a hand over their eyes. Teacher says "Tīng!" and everyone cups an ear. Teacher says "Hǎo!" and everyone gives a thumbs up.
You Do: Character Search. Give Cheng a short paragraph of Chinese text (or a newspaper page). He must circle every 好, 看, or 听 he can find.
Part C: Stroke Practice - 10 Minutes
Focus on 好 (hǎo).
- Demonstrate the stroke order on the board, counting the strokes 1 through 6.
- Cheng practices writing the character large-scale using the calligraphy brush or a thick marker to feel the flow of the strokes.
- Check for the "hook" stroke in the "child" radical.
3. Conclusion: Closure & Recap (10 Minutes)
- Recap: Ask Cheng: "How do you say hello to me?" (Lǎoshī hǎo). "How do I say hello to you?" (Tóngxué hǎo).
- Action Check: Do the "Simon Says" actions one last time at high speed.
- Final Thought: Remind Cheng that every big character is just a collection of small, simple strokes.
Assessment (Formative & Summative)
- Formative: During "Simon Says," observe if Cheng correctly identifies the sound with the action. During stroke practice, observe if the stroke direction (left to right, top to bottom) is followed.
- Summative: At the end of the lesson, show Cheng three flashcards (看, 听, 好). He must say the word and perform the associated action correctly for all three.
Success Criteria
Cheng will be successful if he can:
- Independently use Lǎoshī hǎo when prompted at the start of the next session.
- Identify the "mouth" radical in the word 听 (tīng).
- Pronounce the third tone (the dipping tone) in hǎo correctly.
Differentiation
- For Scaffolding (If struggling): Focus only on the mouth radical 口 and hand radical 🖑. Use color-coded strokes (e.g., all horizontal strokes are red, all vertical are blue).
- For Extension (If advanced): Introduce the character for "Teacher" (老师 - Lǎoshī) and explain that Lǎo means old/wise. Challenge Cheng to write the character 看 from memory.
Homework
- The Greeting Challenge: Find three people (or stuffed animals!) this evening. Bow slightly and say "Tóngxué hǎo" to them.
- Stroke Detective: Practice writing the character 好 five times. Underneath each one, draw a small picture of something you think is "good" (e.g., an apple, a toy).
- Audio Record: Use a phone or tablet to record yourself saying "Lǎoshī hǎo, kàn, tīng, hǎo." Listen back to see if you sound like the teacher!
