Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while playing outdoors.
Materials and Prep
- No materials are required for this lesson.
- Prior knowledge of counting numbers up to 10 is helpful.
Activities
- Counting Steps: Take a walk outside and count each step you take. See if you can count up to 20 or more!
- Number Hopscotch: Draw a hopscotch grid on the ground using chalk. Instead of numbers, write simple arithmetic problems in each square (e.g., 1 + 1, 2 - 1, etc.). Jump on the squares and solve the problems as you go.
- Shape Hunt: Look for shapes in nature while playing outside. Find circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Count how many of each shape you find.
- Addition Tag: Play a game of tag, but with an arithmetic twist. Every time you tag someone, shout out an addition problem for them to solve before they can continue playing.
