Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a descriptive paragraph about fishing using sensory details.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Coloring materials (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Brainstorming: Begin by discussing fishing with your student. Ask them to share what they know about fishing and what they find interesting about it. Write down their responses on a piece of paper.
  2. Sensory Details: Explain to your student that descriptive writing helps the reader imagine what is being described. Discuss the five senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell) and how they can be used to describe fishing. Encourage your student to think about how fishing looks, sounds, feels, smells, and even tastes.
  3. Descriptive Paragraph: Have your student use the brainstormed ideas and sensory details to write a descriptive paragraph about fishing. Remind them to include a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
  4. Revision and Editing: Once the paragraph is written, guide your student through revising and editing their work. Help them check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Encourage them to make improvements and add more descriptive details if needed.
  5. Final Draft: After revising and editing, have your student write a final draft of their descriptive paragraph. They can use their best handwriting and add illustrations if desired.
