We Do: Identify 3 rich vocabulary words from Ch. 1 (scull, dulcet, spring-cleaning) and infer their meaning from context.
You Do: Write a 3-sentence sensory description of Mole’s first impression of the river.
Content: Introduce bird adaptations for flight and riverbank habitats. Focus on Pneumatized Bones (hollow, reinforced structures) and the Keel (sternum attachment for flight muscles).
Activity: Examine a diagram of a bird skeleton (e.g., Kingfisher or Heron). Troy labels the Keel, Furcula (wishbone), and Pneumatized bone structures on his sheet.

Discussion: Explore St. Francis of Assisi's love for creation and how God designed nature with order and beauty. Discuss our duty of stewardship over animals and rivers.
Task: Begin "The River Bank World." Build Mole’s underground home (Mole End) connecting up to Ratty’s cozy riverbank burrow. Focus on incorporating light levels underground and accurate landscape design matching Grahame’s descriptions.
Concept: The Opening — Controlling the central squares (d4, d5, e4, e5).
Practice: Set up the board. Play an opening mini-game where Troy must secure total control of the central four squares using his pawns and knights, comparing it to Ratty claiming his territory on the riverbank.
Tuesday: River Physics & Geographic Navigation
Project & Board Game DayConcept: Vector addition / Speed, Distance, and Time.
Problem: Ratty rows his boat at 4 mph in still water. The River flows upstream to downstream at 2 mph.
- Calculated speed downstream = 4 + 2 = 6 mph.
- Calculated speed upstream = 4 - 2 = 2 mph.
Practice: Troy calculates how long it takes Ratty to travel 3 miles downstream vs. 3 miles upstream to visit Toad Hall.
Activity: Learn basic topographies of river basins (source, meander, mouth). Map the fictional River Bank area from Chapter 1 using proper cartographic elements (compass rose, key, scale).
Activity: Draw a scaled grid blueprint ( top-down view) of "Mole End" or "Ratty's River House" on graph paper using precise measurements (1 block = 1 meter, prepping for Minecraft scaling).
Gameplay Session: Play a session focusing on national geography, route planning, collecting park cards, and understanding protected wildlife environments across North America.
Wednesday: Chapter 2 — "The Open Road"

Content: Feathers serve flight, insulation, and waterproofing. Study 3 types: Contour, Down, and Flight feathers (Remiges and Rectrices).

Task: Build Toad’s Canary-Yellow Caravan and the open road. Use redstone mechanisms to create a functional piston-driven gate or dynamic lighting inside the caravan.

We Do: Identify literary elements: Mood, atmosphere, suspense, and foreshadowing.
You Do: List 4 specific adjectives Grahame uses to build fear in the forest environment.
Topic: Adaptations of Woodland Predators (Owls/Nocturnal Birds).
Key Concepts: Asymmetrical ear placement for precision tracking, facial disc feathers that funnel sound, and specialized fringed flight feathers for silent flight.
Activity: Quick comparison chart: Day river birds (Kingfisher/Heron) vs. Night woodland birds (Barn Owl/Tawny Owl).
