Building on our exploration of the River Bank, Open Road, and Wild Wood in Chapters 1–3, Week 2 shifts from outward exploration to inward sanctuary, hospitality, and consequence. We progress from basic bird skeletal anatomy to internal digestive systems and migration navigation. In math, we transition from linear vector speeds to subterranean area/volume geometry and financial percentages. In chess, we advance from basic opening center control to tactical forks, pins, and piece-trapping mechanics matching Toad's legal imprisonment.
Monday: Chapter 4 — "Mr. Badger"
Shared Reading & Hospitality SystemsI Do: Read Chapter 4 aloud together. Focus on the warm sanctuary of Badger's underground home compared to the terror of the Wild Wood, and Badger's gruff yet deeply hospitable character.
We Do: Contrast the atmosphere of the Wild Wood with the interior of Badger's kitchen using a Venn Diagram (cold/fear vs. warmth/security).
You Do: Identify 3 examples of personification used to describe Badger's home and explain how Grahame makes an underground burrow feel like a castle.
Concept: Building on last week's skeletal structure, examine how birds process energy during harsh winters. Focus on the Crop (food storage), Proventriculus (chemical digestion), and Gizzard (mechanical grinding with swallowed grit/stones).

Content: Badger reveals that his home was built inside the buried ruins of an ancient human city. Introduce the concept of Stratigraphy and how historical settlements build on top of older ruins over centuries (e.g., Roman Britain beneath modern English cities).
Activity: Draw a detailed architectural cross-section ("cutaway view") showing the surface world (Wild Wood covered in snow) down through soil layers to Badger's hidden underground rooms using fine-liner pens and colored pencils.

Wednesday: Chapter 5 — "Dulce Domum" (Sweet Home)
