Objective

By the end of this lesson, the preschool student will be able to identify Puerto Rico on a map, recognize the Puerto Rican flag, and learn a few basic Spanish phrases related to Puerto Rico.

Materials and Prep

  • World map or globe
  • Picture or printout of the Puerto Rican flag
  • Printouts of basic Spanish phrases related to Puerto Rico
  • Coloring materials

Activities

  1. Introduce Puerto Rico: Show the student the world map or globe and point out Puerto Rico. Explain that Puerto Rico is an island located in the Caribbean Sea.
  2. Learn about the Puerto Rican flag: Show the picture or printout of the Puerto Rican flag. Talk about the colors and symbols on the flag. Have the student color a small version of the flag.
  3. Basic Spanish phrases: Teach the student a few basic Spanish phrases related to Puerto Rico. Practice saying "Hola" (hello), "Adiós" (goodbye), "Gracias" (thank you), and "Por favor" (please).
  4. Cultural activity: Have the student color a picture of a traditional Puerto Rican musical instrument, such as a cuatro or maracas. Discuss the importance of music in Puerto Rican culture.
