Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a basic world history timeline, identifying and organizing key events from different time periods.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper or poster board
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • World history reference materials (books, websites, etc.)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with different time periods in world history and gather relevant resources for the student to use.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of a timeline and its importance in understanding history. Discuss how events are organized chronologically.

  2. Guide the student in creating a timeline on the blank paper or poster board. Start with the present day and work backward, dividing the timeline into different time periods (e.g., Ancient Civilizations, Middle Ages, Renaissance, etc.).

  3. Using the world history reference materials, help the student identify key events from each time period and write them on the timeline. Encourage the student to include both major historical events and significant cultural or scientific advancements.

  4. Once the timeline is complete, have the student present it to you or other family members, explaining the significance of the chosen events and their placement on the timeline.

Fifth Grade Talking Points
