Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice arithmetic skills using Lego bricks.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks (various sizes and colors)
- Pen or pencil
- Paper or notebook
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Bricks: Take a pile of Lego bricks and count how many there are in total. Write the number down in your notebook.
- Addition with Bricks: Choose two different piles of Lego bricks. Count the number of bricks in each pile, then add the two numbers together. Write down the addition equation (e.g., 5 + 3 = 8) and the sum in your notebook.
- Subtraction with Bricks: Select a pile of Lego bricks and remove a certain number from it. Count how many bricks are left and write down the subtraction equation (e.g., 10 - 4 = 6) in your notebook.
- Building Arrays: Use Lego bricks to create arrays. For example, build a rectangle with 2 rows of 4 bricks each. Count the total number of bricks in the array and write it down.
- Word Problems: Create word problems using Lego bricks. For example, "If you have 6 red bricks and 4 blue bricks, how many bricks do you have in total?" Solve the word problems using the bricks and write down the equations and answers in your notebook.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with Lego and learn some math at the same time!"
- "We will practice counting, adding, and subtracting using Lego bricks."
- "Counting is important in math because it helps us understand how many things there are."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away a number from another number to find out how many are left."
- "Arrays are a way to arrange objects in rows and columns."
- "Word problems help us apply math skills to real-life situations."
